Google celebrates Douglas Adams

So I wake up this morning and head to Google, as one usually does on a Monday, and notice that the Google home page has a familiar look to it.

I see “large, friendly letters” that read “DON’T PANIC.”

After a few minutes of mouse hovering I discover that the cause of today’s Google salute is that March 11 is Douglas Adams’ birthday. 61st birthday this year, to be exact. Or would have been, had the author still been alive.

What a nice honor!

Happy 61st Douglas. Wherever he’s got to…

A New ‘Hitchhiker’ book?

All the characters have been blown to pieces, and the trilogy is already two books too long.

But the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has never had a problem with highly improbable events.

Adams himself said: “I suspect at some point in the future I will write a sixth Hitchhiker book…I would love to finish Hitchhiker on a slightly more upbeat note.

“Five seems to be a wrong kind of number, six is a better kind of number.”

My initial response to this was one of hesitation… The movie was just kind of “so-so” to be honest, and I still somewhat prefer the BBC series.  So my first thought of hesitation is simply because the movie didn’t turn out quite right and I’m afraid the new book might not either.

But since I’ve recently been re-reading the books, and still hang on every word just as I did several years ago, the first time through, part of me really wants to know what happens next, after Stavromula Beta.  So I’m bordering on excitement at the idea…

Best of luck to newly-crowned King of Satirical Genius, Eoin Colfer.  I will be waiting with bated breath…

It’s about time…

It only took 22 years, but I’m done:

hhg-amiga

I have finally beaten the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Infocom game.  Of course, as is always the case with an Infocom game, I needed a little help.

This was the first game I got with my Commodore 128 back in the mid-80’s.  I got another version for the Amiga, and finished that one with my Amiga emulator just the other day.

And to think, for all these years, that there actually was a “causal relationship” between the toothbrush and the tree collapse! Boy, did they pull the wool over my eyes!

Hey, you can play an updated, 20th Anniversary edition of the game at BBC 4’s website!
