Well, it’s almost football season again. I’m planning on trying to get to the first Mountaineer game of the season this year. It’s often hard to get tickets, so we’ll see.

It’s all White

Man, that was an exciting game this evening. But it was nice of Mother Nature to get in on the act, adding a little White snow into the mix.

West Virginia held on by the skin of their teeth to win 13-7 over South Florida.

So that means that WVU ends the season at 8-4. Not what we were wishing for when the year started. A couple of close losses in there that could’ve gone either way, and you have to win those. But it was nice to end the regular season with a win.

I wish Pat White much success at the next level. I’m not sure if I would support the discussion that I heard on ESPN tonight about “retiring” Pat’s #5. Of course, only time will really tell whether that honor is truly deserved. He would have to attain success in the NFL, I think, so it’s too early to comment on that.

Speaking of White, look outside. Well, if you live around here anyway. It’s white. ‘Cause of snow. Not a lot of it out there… just enough to mess up the roads. I hope everyone is careful leaving the stadium tonight.

I’ve been kind of sick for the past couple of days. I’ve just basically been taking it easy around the house. I’ve been playing around with some classic computer emulators lately and I’ve been reading On The Edge: The Spectacular Rise and Fall of Commodore and combined they have me thinking about the early days of personal computing.

Well, since I haven’t been feeling that great, I decided I would sit down with a classic TI-99/4A emulator (Not Commodore, I know. That’ll probably be next week.) and I’ve been re-creating one of my first programming projects:

So, that rather funny-looking screen shot above is my low-tech attempt to copy the scoreboard at the “New Mountaineer Field” in Morgantown. Of course, this is the 1980 scoreboard, created with 1980 technology. I was always fascinated with scoreboards when I was a kid. And then I saw the hi-tech (for its time) scoreboard at the new stadium, and after my first Mountaineer game, I came back home and started writing this in TI BASIC. Yes, I’ve always been a nerd.

Just for fun I’ve been re-coding it, just to see if I can do it. I think I’ve forgotten more than I remember when it comes to TI BASIC. But considering I haven’t actually used it in twenty years… eh, it’s not going too bad.

I’m not done yet. The screen shot you see is only partially functional. Plus I don’t have the message board (cyan square in the top-center) working at all. But it’s been fun. I imagine the project to be very similar to someone who works on cars getting a hold of their first car and re-tooling it. Just to see if they can still do it.

So, anyway, West Virginia really is getting beat 14-7 right now, in the second quarter. But I don’t know if I’ll make it through the whole game or not. I’m still not 100% well…

Well, I guess the good news is…

The Mounties certainly blew it this afternoon, huh? Of course, in the first half at least, they certainly didn’t get any help from the zebras. They’d call a personal foul on ECU and then the ECU goofball would retaliate, and then–nothing. So, thanks refs.

But beyond that, the ‘eers couldn’t get the ball in the end zone for nothing.

As I started to say, I guess the good news is… maybe it will be a little bit easier to get some tickets in a few weeks. Right now, it’s almost impossible for a family of four to afford to go to a Mountaineer football game. I haven’t been to a home game since Don Nehlen’s last game. I would like to take Ryan to one, but it’s just too darn much.

But now, after this loss, maybe things will change.
